Demon Dentist by David Walliams Review
I was surprised to learn that British actor, comedian and judge of Britain’s Got Talent, David Walliams is also a highly successful children’s book author. In fact he is now suppose to be the highest selling children’s author from the United Kingdom. His name has become synonymous with Roald Dahl as the legendary author’s successor.
Demon Dentist is one of the many books written by David Walliams. While not all books have a supernatural element to it, Demon Dentist is definitely one that fits the supernatural fantasy for kids genre.
Now one thing you should know. Demon Dentist is a book that will always remain close to my heart even though I did not buy it for myself and the book’s target audience is definitely not a 40+ year old man.
You see there was a time when my daughter simply did not want to read. She would rather do anything else – even just sit on the couch and do nothing – than read. I tried getting her excited about books but was simply unable to do anything.
One day while browsing through one of those toys + book stores, my daughter came across Demon Dentist. She read the synopsis and was kind of interested in it. I made a deal with her that today I would buy the book and if she didn’t like it after reading the whole thing, I would come back with her and she could pick up any toy she wanted.
Well, since then, my daughter who is 10 right now has read all of David Walliams’ books. She regularly reads and wants to buy a new book at least once a month (sometimes more). The only thing is just like me, she enjoys only those stories that have a supernatural element to it and still does not read regular books.
Coming back to the review of Demon Dentist, well simply put, this book is aimed at tweens or preteens. My daughter found it quite funny and parts of it a bit scary as well. Overall though it was a complete entertainer that converted her into a reading fan.
As you may have already guessed by the name of the book, there is a new dentist in town who is not who she seems to be. Also strange things have been happening in town with respect to children’s teeth. Instead of the tooth fairy, children have been encountering all kinds of weird things such as spiders, slugs, earwigs crawling beneath their pillow etc.
It is up to a boy named Alfie to uncover the mystery and do something about the dentist who has created terror around town.
Demon Dentist is one of those books that would mainly appeal to children and at the most some teenagers. It is not one of those children’s fantasies that adults can enjoy.
However, if you are looking for a book for your child, it is without doubt an excellent purchase and sure to keep your kid entertained.
As for the rating, I would not be able to give a fair rating considering the book was not meant for a guy like me. However, as mentioned above, it is a book that will always remain close to my heart, got my daughter to start reading and I would wholeheartedly recommend the book to all parents.
